Frequently Asked Questions
What is mold?
Molds are a group of microorganisms that are found almost anywhere. Mold is a type of fungus and serves an important role in our environment. However, some molds are harmful to adults, children, and pets and should be removed properly by a certified mold remediator.
How does mold spread?
When tiny airborne spores of mold burst, and then land on a favorable surface, they proliferate into visible colonies, and find new favorable surfaces on which to further develop. This process will continue with the right conditions until it is properly removed.
Can I just use bleach to kill the mold?
Bleach can be used on ‘Hard’, Non-porous materials such as; glass, hard surfaced countertops, porcelain surfaces, etc… However, it will not affect the mold in porous materials and wall cavities. Mold Remediation involves the need to remove and /or disinfect organic porous materials which have been contaminated by mold. OSHA’s Mold Remediation/ Clean up Guidelines state that bleach should NOT be used in a mold remediation. Furthermore, it has been found that using bleach on your walls and wall cavities can damage the metal studs of your home reducing its structural integrity.
Is all mold bad?
Mold serves an essential part of our ecosystem to break down dead organic matter such as dead leaves, trees, etc. Without mold, the earth would be covered in biomass. Mold can be found outdoors and indoors in just about every environment, including your home and office. Mold is only BAD when it is found in elevated or concentrated levels that it can become a problem.
What is required for mold growth?
We here at Restoration X use a simple equation to explain Mold Growth.
Food + Water+ Heat= MOLD
- Molds food is anything organic, such as wood, paper, cotton, etc…
- Molds water source can be caused by a simple leaky pipe, pipe burst, water tank leak, etc…
- Heat is generally anything over 78 degrees.
Once you have removed one of the above items from the equation, mold will not continue to populate. However, the mold will still need to be removed or it will continue to populate once its environment supplies all three components again.
How do I know if I have a mold problem?
Mold can visibly be many different colors: yellow, green, white, gray, black, brown, etc. It may look furry, slimy, or powdery. Usually, you can see or smell mold. If you can see it or smell it, this normally means you have elevated amounts of mold. However, mold growth can be hidden. If you are unsure of whether or not you have a problem, contact us today!
